The Cold Math of the AI Transition

The sobering reality of the current tech landscape is that profitability no longer guarantees job security. Giant companies are thriving, yet the human workforce reduction continues due to a distinct corporate pattern: resource reallocation fueled by structural anxiety.
In early June, Oracle initiated one of the largest layoffs in its history, targeting roughly 30,000 employees. Simultaneously, Qualtrics announced the sunsetting of its successful customer feedback tool, Delighted.
Neither company is financially failing. Oracle’s cloud revenue is hitting record highs. However, executives operate under the calculation that if they do not reallocate capital to absolute AI infrastructure immediately, they risk falling behind. To fund this transition, human workers are being treated as liquid capital. Oracle is shifting billions directly into AI data centers and hardware, while Qualtrics is sacrificing a stable product to move engineering talent to "AI Suites."
The emotional weight for the industry stems from this exact shift: software engineers and tech workers are no longer losing jobs because business is bad. They are being displaced to cover the massive compute and development costs required to build automated systems.
