Going AI-Native: The July 2026 Cull
361 words • 2 min readWHEN THE PRODUCT ITSELF IS THE CASUALTY
June was about paying the AI infrastructure bill. July 2026 is about something colder: companies no longer just trimming headcount, but deleting entire products and rebuilding themselves as "AI-native" from the ground up. The victims this month weren't only workers — they were the apps and browsers millions actually used.
🛑 TV Time (26 Million Watch Histories, Deleted)
On July 15, TV Time — one of the largest TV and film-tracking communities on the internet, with over 25 million users — went dark. The official notice blamed operating costs and weak demand for a paid tier. The real driver sits one layer up: parent company Whip Media has pivoted toward enterprise AI, chiefly its Helix automation engine. A beloved consumer app that was profitable enough for millions simply wasn't profitable enough for a company chasing an AI roadmap.
🛑 OpenAI Atlas (Cannibalized by ChatGPT)
Barely nine months after launch, OpenAI sunset Atlas, the standalone AI browser it had built with ChatGPT at its core. Leadership's verdict: "the browser is a feature, not the destination." Atlas joined Sora on the pile of killed "side quests" — but its agentic browsing capabilities weren't discarded, they were harvested and folded back into ChatGPT's desktop app and a Chrome extension. The product died so its organs could keep the mothership growing.
🛑 Mews (The "AI-Native" Restructuring)
Amsterdam hotel-software unicorn Mews cut roughly 15% of its staff — about 170 people — and, unusually, said the quiet part out loud: the roles belong to "an era that is ending." Fresh off a $300M raise at a $2.5B valuation, Mews is rebuilding around agentic AI that coordinates hotel pricing, staffing, and guest services. Staff had spent months being told to build their own agents and treat AI fluency as a baseline skill — right before the company decided it needed fewer of them.
The pattern for July is unmistakable: the AI transition has moved past the balance sheet. It is now rewriting what products exist and what "the company" even is.
