TikTok is cutting roughly 500 human content moderators and moving review to AI: ~250 in Nashville (office closing), ~300 in Dublin, and more across Asia. The company says automated systems already catch 85%+ of rule-breaking content and points to "enhancing large language models" to do the rest. The union representing UK moderators calls the replacements "hastily developed, immature AI." The people who decided what stayed up are being replaced by the models that now will.

The same week, two big cutters went out of their way to say AI wasn't the reason. Zillow shed 500 (7%) on Aug 4 — a self-described "AI-native" company that wouldn't answer whether AI shaped the cuts. Etsy cut 220 and its CEO explicitly rejected the AI framing. The pattern of 2026 has flipped: the loud "AI did it" era is giving way to a quieter one, where companies automate and call it "efficiency" or "restructuring."
