The Humans Who Trained AI Just Lost Their Jobs to It

Mechanical Turk spent 21 years selling human intelligence to machines. This month, the machines stopped buying.

The clearest AI casualty is rarely a dramatic shutdown. Sometimes it is a quiet marketplace outliving its purpose — the place that taught the models, closed once the models learned.

Amazon Mechanical Turk (21 years, closed September 30)

Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk on September 30, ending a 21-year marketplace that paid people to do the small tasks machines could not: transcribe audio, sort images, label data. Jeff Bezos called it "artificial artificial intelligence" — humans standing in for software that did not exist yet.

That stand-in is no longer needed. Models now perform the same labeling and transcription directly, and a new tier of data companies — Scale AI, Mercor, Prolific — took the high-quality training work with stricter vetting and better task design. The shutdown takes two AWS companions with it, SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI, retiring the whole human-in-the-loop data pipeline at once.

It is a neat closing of the loop. The work that trained the models is now the work the models do, and the platform that supplied it has nothing left to sell.
